  Sultry Excerpt from “Fiery Moon”

Shane grunted in surprise a moment before my lips met his in a hot kiss. I moaned into it, my hands roaming his body beneath his shirt. His muscles were so hard. I breathed in his musk as I groaned against him. His cock swelled, hard, pressing on my groin. My hips undulated as our tongues fenced.

My head spun. Live life, he said. And I so wanted to live right now. We almost died and we didn't. His hands seized my ass through my pants. He pulled me tighter. I shuddered, my clit aching in my panties as I ground against his bulge. Every rotation of my hips increased the throbbing bliss.

He made me wet. He made me hot. So he had to do something about it.

My fingers found his buttons. I worked them down and threw open his shirt. My hands stroked his muscular sides and up to his chest. My fingernails curled, scratching him. He moaned into the kiss, his hands squeezing harder.

He broke the kiss. “You couldn't resist.”

“Don't be surprised,” I moaned, my hands sliding down his torso. “You've smelled how wet you made me.”

“Intoxicating.” He breathed in again, his hands guiding my hips, grinding me on his cock.

I leaned down and licked at his chest, tasting his skin. I groaned and found his small nipple. I nipped it with my teeth. He growled. His hands moved on my waist. They undid my gun belt. It dropped to the ground, my radio squawking as my pack responded to my call for backup.

  I didn't care.

Shane's fingers unsnapped my pants and shoved his hand into them. I groaned as he caressed the waistband of my panties. His fingers dipped in, brushing my curls. I sucked hard on his nipple, bringing a moan as he pressed his hand down into my panties.

  And found my pussy.

I nipped his nipple again as his fingers stroked my sopping pussy lips. I shuddered as he stroked me. I released his nipple and licked up to his neck. I loved how he tasted. I wanted to lick his entire body.

  But there wasn't time.

“Fuck me,” I moaned into his ear. “Hard. I need it.”

He growled. It wasn't the throaty snarl of a wolf, but the almost purring roar of a tiger. Passionate and deadly. He spun me around and pressed me against the hood of his car. He bent me over the car, my arms resting on the hood. His hands tore down my pants and panties in one motion.

  Such hunger.

I shook my hips, dying to be penetrated, the air cool on the wet lips of my pussy. I had never needed a man in me more than at this exact moment. I let out a whining moan, my fingernails scratching at the hood of his Camaro. Why wasn't he fucking me? I threw a look over my shoulder.

He stared at me, licking his lips.

  “Don't watch! Fuck me.”

“Let me admire the feast I am about to enjoy.” His dark hand stroked my ivory butt-cheek. I shuddered as he moved lower. He dipped to my taint then reached the curls surrounding my pussy. He ran his finger up and down my vulva. “Delicious.”

“Yes, yes. Now enjoy. Feast. Please. I need it so badly.” I pressed back into him. His finger popped into my pussy. My silky folds clenched down on the intruder. It was a taste of what I really wanted.

  Chapter One

The werecoyotes whooped and hollered as I led Lexie Myers through the Moonrise Sheriff Department's Jail. I grit my teeth against the vile things they said. I hated the Donovan Clan, a pack of degenerate coyote shifters always causing problems. Especially, Michael Donovan. There were three in the cell, all drunk at noon, Not a surprise.

“Bring her in here, Veronica,” laughed one. “We'll show her how to have a good time in jail.”

I snarled at them, letting my wolf growl as I flashed them dangerous looks. Two flinched, but the third was too drunk or too stupid not to. He just leaned against the bars, leering at the prisoner I escorted.

Lexie Myers had caused plenty of trouble the last week, but she didn't deserve to have those hounds sniff at her.

I led her to her cell and shook my head as I pushed her inside and closed the door. “Turn around so I can unlock your cuffs.”

Lexie nodded, her dark-red hair lank about her face. She turned and pushed her wrists through a slot. I uncuffed them swiftly and tucked the handcuffs into my belt. She turned, rubbing her wrists, her eyes red from crying.

“I hope you appreciate what Penny's done for you.”

“I do,” she said, her voice hoarse.

“You're lucky you have her for a friend. I wouldn't forgive you after what you did.”

Lexie was a witch, like my friend Penny. The pair had a...complicated past. I wasn't shocked to learn the bubbly, plump Penny had a past she had fled from—few ended up in Moonrise who weren't running from something—but to learn she had been a thief, robbing jewelry stores with Lexie and Axel, was a shock. And that last job had gone so wrong, Axel ended up dead and Lexie went to prison.

When Lexie broke out, she tracked Penny down and tried to ruin her life. And Penny forgave her. I couldn't have. Hating was too hard to let go of for any reason.

“So don't break her heart, Lexie. I'm keeping an eye on you. Okay?”

  “Yes, Deputy,” swallowed Lexie.

“I don't care that you're a witch. I'm one angry wolf-bitch. You do not want to fuck with me.”

She flinched as I snarled and nodded her head again.

“Good. Keep up that good behavior and you'll be out soon.” Lexie wa
s lucky. To protect Penny, who was dating Thomas—a werebear police officer from the next town over—the pack had bent a few laws to keep Lexie out of prison. Penny was too much a part of Moonrise to let her be sent to prison for the rest of her life thanks to Lexie's misbehavior.

What she did before coming to Moonrise was none of our business. Shifters looked out for their own, and she was an honorary part of our family. If Forrest, my packleader, were in town, he would have made the same call.

But he was off on his honeymoon with Kotie, another witch who had caused all sorts of problems for Moonrise. Well, it wasn't her fault her father turned out to be a psychopath and was using her to gain the power of the Moon Tear Spring.

Cell locked up, I went to fetch Penny from the visitor room. Like Lexie, the plump blonde's eyes were red and puffy. I couldn't help grinning at her as I opened the door. She frowned at me and asked, “What?”

“You know how to pick your friends,” I laughed. “She tried to frame you and kill you.”

“Of course I know how to pick my friends.” Penny gave me a pointed look, but it was ruined by her puffy eyes. “I chose you.”

The way she said it made me throw my head back and laugh, my blonde curls bouncing about my shoulders. “Yes, you did.”

Penny stood and stretched her back, her large breasts straining at her top. She was a big girl, but carried it well, always looking like she was ready to party in her tight jeans and low-cut tops. “Well, I'm ready to go. Thomas is taking me out tonight.”

I envied that she had found her mate, imprinted by the werebear. “And how is Thomas?”

  “Amazing.”

“I had a one-night stand with him once.” I shuddered, remembering that night two years ago. There was a tinge of guilt in the memory—I always felt guilty after my flings—but I was good at ignoring it after all these years since Shane. “He made me howl.”

Penny giggled, mirth lighting up her face. “Oh, he does the same thing to me. My toes curl and my hair stands up on end.”

  “Good.”

I unlocked the door with a keycard. Though Moonrise was a small town in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in southeastern Montana, the Moonrise Sheriff Department had gotten a grant from the Federal Government a few years back to modernize our security. We stepped into the hallway and passed the holding cells. The coyotes cackled.

Penny shook her head. “The coyotes are back.”

“Yes,” I snarled, giving the curs an angry glare. “Caught them running a poker game all drunk out of their minds at noon. Curs.” I spat at their cell.

We reached the next door, and I swiped my keycard. The lock buzzed, and I yanked it open. It led to the heart of the police department where all our desks were set up, making an almost maze-like series of paths to reach the door. None of the desks were arranged in any logical pattern. My fellow deputies, all werewolves like me, moved through the room or sat at their desks, working at computers or filling out paper.

They were all a part of my pack led by Forrest, the Sheriff of Moonrise.

There was a relaxed air about the room. No problems were happening. Everything was calm, even with the Donovans back in town. We had run them out a few months ago when they attacked us. Fiona, their leader, was busted up and stuck in solitary confinement at the state penitentiary.

My phone chirped. I pulled it out of my pocket and swiped the screen. I blinked in shock at who texted me then muttered, “Really?” My good mood soured.

  “What?” asked Penny.

It was so strange to see a text from Shane. It had been three years since the bastard left me in the hotel room in Missoula, three years of anger because he abandoned me, and yet a smile flashed across my face. For a moment, excited joy surged through me as I read the message.

Shane. My heart sped up. The tiger and those handsome eyes.

And then I squashed it with the rage. It had never left me. Three years I had fed my anger with bloody, furious meat. He abandoned me after I gave myself to him. He accepted my imprint, and then the asshole fled in the middle of the night, only sending me a single text message.

And now three years later he sent a second. “Michael Donovan's back in Moonrise. We should talk. My flight lands at 4 PM. S.” That followed with his flight number.

“Just an asshole I used to know,” I snarled.

  “Old boyfriend?”

“Something like that.” I shook my head, fighting to keep my anger under control. “You can find your own way out?”

“I can. You should text him back. Maybe you can have fun.”

I shot her an angry, dangerous look, and then the smile crossed my lips as I remembered the ecstasy of his embrace. The fun we had. The night in the hotel room. He had made my body ache and...

No. Remember what else he did. Remember the pain.

Penny laughed as she retreated. I let her go and sank down onto the corner of my desk, my hand clenching about the phone. I wanted to howl my frustration. I wanted to hurl my phone across the room and watch it explode into a satisfying shower of plastic and circuitry. I wanted to text Shane and tell him I was wet and ready to have fun.

He was my mate and I hated him.

He was my mate and I loved him.

“Fuck,” I snarled. I could still remember the first time I saw him. I was sitting at this very desk...

  ~ ~ ~

  Three years ago...

“Uh-huh,” I grunted, writing down what Ajax said, “The brothel trailer's up on Moonrise Ridge right now?”

“Yep,” Ajax said, his voice thick and strong. He was a miner at the Humpback Mines, and a man that knew how to use those big, rough hands on a woman's body. I had only been in Moonrise for a few months, but Ajax was the best man in town I had hooked up with.

He wasn't good mate material, and I was glad I didn't feel a hint of the imprint try to form between us. Wolf shifters and humans did not make good mates. Humans had such a hard time with the concept of monogamy sometimes. I'd prefer a wolf mate, but none of my new pack had peaked my interest.

Except Forrest, and he was knocking boots with Macy.

“And where did you hear this?” I asked.

He hesitated. “I don't want to get any of my pals in trouble.”

“We only care about the Donovans and getting those girls out of trouble,” I assured him. Since I came to Moonrise, drifting on my own for a few years after my last pack fell apart, I had heard nothing but bad things about the Donovan Clan. “So don't worry. Trust me.” My voice grew throaty. “You trusted me with the handcuffs last night.”

He coughed. “Okay. Well, uh, I heard it from a few guys. They plan on going up after shift and...relaxing.”

  “Were you planning on going?”

“I never have to pay.” He said it with such confidence. Mmm, I pictured his broad muscles as I leaned back in my chair, pressing my thighs together covered by my dark-brown uniform. I was growing used to being a Deputy. Never thought I would be one, but every member of Forrest's pack was. It was a good pack without the backbiting politics that destroyed my original.

“No, I bet you don't. Want to get together tonight? I may have to debrief you thoroughly.”

  “No handcuffs?”

“But they were so fun.” I pictured him bound to my bed, his muscles straining as I rode him. “I know you loved it. But maybe you could use them on me.”

“Okay.” So eager. “Tonight. I'll be there around eight.”

“Perfect. I have to go and track down this lead. It sounds hot. Thanks.”

I hung up before he answered and glanced around the room. Hank was assigned to the Donovans organized crime investigation. The redheaded werewolf sat at his desk reading a novel, leaned back in his chair. He was one of the older wolves, almost thirty. Forrest had a young pack. He created it himself when he arrived in Moonrise, pulling together stragglers who wandered through, aimless and lost like I had been.

The town seemed to draw the restless. Probably the Moon Tear Spring.
Beyond keeping the peace for the humans, it was the duty of the pack to protect the great energy held in the spring, keeping any witches from abusing it.

“Hank,” I said, tearing off the top piece of paper from the notepad. “Got a tip on the Donovan's mobile brothel.”

A wolfish grin appeared on his face. He lowered his book, carefully dog-earing his current page, and swung his feet off his desk. “I love ruining their day.”

I walked over and handed it to him. As I did, the doors to the bullpen opened and...

My breath caught. My cheeks warmed. I froze, hand half-outstretched, paper clutched in fingers as I stared at who entered. The flames Ajax had lit in my nethers flared into a bonfire. My nipples hardened in my bra. I couldn't help but let out a low, pleased growl as I stared at the gorgeous man striding through the desks. He had rich, caramel skin and a roguish smile. Tall, not as broad-shouldered as Forrest, but still muscular. His strength was obvious beneath his suit jacket and silk shirt. The top two buttons were left undone, revealing a caramel skin and a hint of curling, black chest hairs. He strolled with a predator's grace, natural, no effort, his eyes flicking around, hungry, hunting.

  He was not human.

I breathed in his musk. Spicy. Exotic. Some kind of feline shifter. Dangerous and powerful. A weretiger. His brown eyes fell on mine, so warm and inviting. His head nodded as he strolled past me, his smile growing...hungry.

He spotted prey he wanted to devour.

The imprint lurched in me. It wanted to lash out, to tie me to this complete stranger. The imprint was instinctual, primal love at first sight, binding two compatible people together with love and desire. Different shifters had it with different strengths, and some species didn't have it at all. It was strongest in werewolves and werebears. Sometimes it could form in an instant, two peoples' eyes meeting for the first time and their instincts knowing this was their mate.

But I held back. It he was a wolf, I would have surrendered to him. I would have let him claim me right here in the middle of the police station, bent over my desk, howling for my entire pack to see as he plunged over and over into me. My body yearned for an alpha. It was in my blood.
